The W Trek in Torres del Paine, Planned Properly
The W is a linked mountain itinerary, not a single open trail. A workable plan aligns park access, refugio or campsite reservations, transport connections, daylight, and the current status of each section. Book only after checking the official notices that apply to your dates.
Choose the direction around your bookings
East-to-west and west-to-east versions both work. The deciding factors are usually where beds or campsites remain available and which boat or bus connections match your arrival. Avoid committing to flights or onward buses that depend on a perfect final hiking day.
A common five-day shape
- Enter the park and approach the Base Torres sector.
- Hike the Base Torres valley when the route and weather permit.
- Cross toward the Francés sector.
- Use the Paine Grande area as the link toward Grey.
- Visit the Grey sector and exit by the transport combination you reserved.
This is a planning outline, not a statement that every segment is open. CONAF currently publishes seasonal closures and guide requirements, and those notices can change with conditions.
Reservations that must agree
- Park entry for the correct dates.
- Every overnight stop; camping outside authorised sites is prohibited.
- Catamaran and bus times, with realistic transfer margins.
- Any guide required for the season or route.
- Your final-night accommodation in Puerto Natales if connections are tight.
Weather and trail discipline
Patagonian weather can turn quickly. Carry a waterproof shell, insulating layer, sun protection, dry storage, and a backup food margin even on a supported itinerary. CONAF instructs visitors to stay on authorised marked trails, walk in daylight, avoid hiking alone, and follow closure times. Fires and smoking are prohibited in the park.
Current 2026 checks
As of the official notices available in August 2026, CONAF says the mountain W is closed during June and July, and publishes separate seasonal conditions for Base Torres and the Macizo Paine circuit. Because extensions or new restrictions may be announced, treat any older blog itinerary as background only.
