Chile & Argentina

Atacama, Mendoza & Patagonia

The southern Andes shift from copper desert to vineyard to glacier in the space of a few flights. Picking two ends of that arc usually beats trying to see it all.

Two routes to choose between

The high-altitude north

San Pedro de Atacama as a base for high-altitude lagoons, geysers, and a possible crossing to Uyuni in Bolivia. Pair with Salta and Jujuy on the Argentine side for Quebrada de Humahuaca's colours.

The southern Patagonia loop

El Calafate for Perito Moreno, El Chaltén for Fitz Roy day-hikes, then cross to Torres del Paine via Puerto Natales for the W or O treks.

Wine country bonus

Mendoza fits well between Santiago and Bariloche on a longer trip, with Aconcagua looming on the drive over the pass.
